The far side of Table Mountain is home to South Africa’s excellent wine and more. Well-to-do Cape Towners happily put down roots in the neighborhood on spacious lots, preferably surrounded by high walls and majestic trees. One of those properties holds an astonishing home.
The architects Pieter Malan, 40, and Jan-Heyn Vorster, 44, pondered a while before proposing a type of treehouse to their client. Not the sort of treehouse the word usually conjures up, but rather a house that resembles a tree. Clad in wooden slats similar to vertical blinds, the building sections of varying heights appear to grow beyond themselves. An unconventional structure on the edge of a meadow dotted with square ponds. Almost in the forest, but connected to all public utilities. Inside, only the essentials – two rooms, kitchen, bath. Crowned by a deck from which you can let your gaze wander over the treetops and the neighboring properties into the far distance and Table Mountain.
